With all the trouble we had
getting out of Aqua Harbor we began to feel like there was some sort of curse
on us or the Pig that would prevent us reaching Columbus. I’m beginning to feel like the curse is real
but it must have something to do with Mobile, or points beyond.
When we last posted we had
ordered two rebuilt carburetors and expected delivery on Friday (11/9/12). The overnight delivery didn’t work quite as
planned and the carburetors finally showed up Saturday afternoon. Just about two hours before they were delivered
T, the mechanic here at Columbus Marina, got to thinking about the model coming
and was pretty darn sure I had the wrong size carburetors on the way. He and I discussed it and called the
supplier. Although the supplier never
really said a mistake had been made, he agreed to ship out the correct models and
accept the first pair back. That was the
good news. The bad news was our timing
couldn’t have been much worse.
It was Saturday afternoon
here and even though the supplier was in California, he couldn’t get the
carburetors ready to go in time to find a post office open for business. We resigned ourselves to the idea that they
would be mailed Monday and received in our itchy little hands on Tuesday. A storm was due in Sunday night and Monday so
we rationalized sitting tight over the weekend was prudent anyway.
Monday came and I couldn’t
figure out why I didn’t have an email with the routing number. I emailed the supplier but hadn’t received a
response. Anna took a long walk and did
some cleaning, I did a little caulking on the inside of the boat and we passed
a lot of the day watching war movies in honor of Veteran’s Day. Neither one of us thought about the fact that
post offices around the nation would be closed.
No packages would be mailed that day.
So we woke up today
thinking the carburetors would be here in a few hours and we’d be on our way in
the morning. We have been warding off
frustration and boredom with an eye glued to the calendar. The bad news this morning about the delay just
about put us over the edge as we watched a string of loopers pull out in the
sunshine. At this rate we figure we’re
moving at about half the speed of smell.
The good news, if you’re
really digging deep for good news, is that I had a project today. The element on the hot water heater had been
slowly fading and finally died completely. Since this is a repair I had anticipated I
actually had a replacement element and I got it installed today.
So we’ll get through
another day watching the calendar. But
it may soon be time to start thinking about appropriate sacrifices to the river
gods.
See ya on the water!
