After seven days at Aqua Harbor we were finally ready to leave this morning. Anna and I were removing the water and electrical cords, both engines were warming up, the sun was finally breaking through the rain clouds that have plagued us for the past 4 days. It looked like a great day to boat and we were ready.

Just then the port engine coughed and died, it restarted but it was running a little rough. As we continued to disconnect the umbilical cords I had to restart the engine a third time. Now it just wasn’t running right at all. I hadn’t been happy with the way this engine had sounded the past couple of time we’ve left port but it always seemed to smooth out after running an hour or so, so I hadn’t been overly concerned. As much as we wanted to get underway today I knew I’d be sorry if we didn’t check out the engine.

I finally decided to go into the engine room aka the basement and take a look. After getting there I decided I had no business trying to diagnose something I knew nothing about, so we called the repairman. It took him about an hour to give us a diagnosis: the carburetor needs to be rebuilt. We also need new spark plugs because the excess gas that has been going into the carburetor at the wrong time has fouled the plugs that are only 100 hours old.

So the bottom line is it looks like we’re not going anywhere too soon, we’ll be here at least two more nights. Though disappointed with the delay, we are reminding ourselves that we knew this sort of thing could happen and we really don’t have a tight schedule. We’re also feeling lucky that this all came down here where we have a nice place to stay and a good mechanic. Besides I have my honey with me how could it get any better?

See ya on the water
